Information on collection, storage, and volume
Serum, plasma, and whole blood
Three 2-mL platelet-poor, frozen citrated plasma tubes, 5 mL whole blood, and 2 mL frozen serum
Gel-barrier tube or red-top tube, lavender-top (EDTA) tube or yellow-top (ACD) tube, and blue-top (sodium citrate) tube
Freeze serum and plasma. Maintain whole blood at room temperature; stable for seven days.
Noncitrated plasma; gross hemolysis; fibrin clot; clotted samples if adequate DNA not obtained
Plasma must be separated from cells within 45 minutes of venipuncture. Plasma must be centrifuged a second time before being placed in plastic transport tubes. Freeze within two hours and keep frozen until testing is performed. Allow gel-barrier tube or red-top tube to clot, centrifuge, and remove serum from cells within one hour. Send serum in plastic transport tube. To avoid delays in turnaround time when requesting multiple tests on frozen samples, please submit separate frozen specimens for each test requested.
